Welcome

European Tournament for Dancing Students (ETDS) – Dancing for “der Maus“

It’s the biggest European dance tournament for students which has been held twice a year since 1989 in different university towns. It’s three days filled with practicing, competing, dancing, and making new friends. The focus is set on Breitensport for dancers who have no or little experience in regular competitions. On Saturday the dancers compete in Ballroom, and on Sunday in Latin dances. Additionally, there’s a smaller number of experienced dancers who compete in the Open class. To make it more fun they get their partner allotted and sometimes special rules apply. Breitensport dancers, however, may bring their own dance partner or find one in the blind date program on Fridays. But we don’t just dance for fame and honor. We dance to bring home “der Maus” – our cute and furry challenge cup. So get out your petticoat and the polka dots, transform into a dashing pinup girl, and get ready to compete at the 57th ETDS in Aachen!

Routes

Venue

  • Name: Mensa Vita
  • Street: Helmertweg 1
  • Address: 52074 Aachen
  • Bus stop: Wendlingweg
  • Venue: Our tournament hall is going to be Mensa Vita – the student cafeteria right behind the University Hospital. It meets our needs perfectly: it’s spacious, it has parquet and being surrounded by green and university buildings no one will be bothered by us. Take a stroll outside to relax from an exhausting tournament round, have a cup of coffee on the porch, or catch some sun on the sun deck.
Location

Aachen

As the most western town of Germany Aachen lies within the heart of Europe and is rich in cultural diversity. The city is versatile: Health resort, a place of Christian pilgrimage, an operating site for entrepreneurs, scientists and students from all over the world.

You may look forward to a charming city with a picturesque city center. It impresses with the famous cathedral of Charlemagne which had been the first German building to be listed in the World Cultural heritage of the UNESCO. Emperor Charlemagne left behind a “European” spirit that continued flourishing the city in the border triangle of Germany - Netherlands - Belgium. The proximity to other European countries does the rest: “Europe” is everyday- life in Aachen.

When strolling through the streets you may wonder about Aachen’s impressive history and enjoy the dynamic of a university town. You will find a vast variety of restaurants tempting your taste buds with international cuisine.

Our suggestion:

  1. The scenic route: Take the bus (No. 33) to “Bushof”, turn to your right, then take a right onto the street Kurhausstraße until the second traffic light, turn left onto “Großkölnstraße” and keep walking straight on until you find yourself right on the market square. This should take you no longer than 8 minutes. After looking at the beautiful town hall (and cathedral behind the town hall) you take a right turn onto “Pontstraße”. Then, you just keep walking straight on for about 500 m. You will find plenty of restaurants on your way: Lebanese, Italian, Asian, Turkish.

  2. The “I need food now”-route: Take the bus (No. 3B or 33) to “Ponttor”. There will be plenty of restaurants. You may also walk down the Pontstraße and look for a restaurant there. If you keep walking you’ll end up on the market square. Take a left onto the Großkölnstraße to get back to the bus stop “Bushof” and take bus # 33 (Vaals Bloemendal) back to Wendlingweg or Forckenbeckstraße. Bus # 33 also stops at Driescher Gässchen. If taking a bus from Ponttor back to the venue be sure to take bus # 3A or # 33 (Vaals Bloemendal).

Volunteers

Why become a volunteer

No volunteers,
no ETDS.

Volunteers are essential to every ETDS: It requires about 1000 to 2000 hours of work during the weekend. Therefore, we need your helping hand to fill our shifts. We sure have something that suits you. Be part of making this ETDS a grand success and sign up!

What is expected of you?

Sign up for a shift that suits you. Be on time, be reliable and do your shift with diligence. As a member of team Aachen, you will be informed about the volunteer registration as soon as it has opened. In a first step, you will be asked to register for the most urgent shifts. As soon as they are mostly taken, additional shifts will be added to our Volunteers Shift Organisation Programme (V.S.O.P.). We hope that the most urgent (and most unpopular) shifts will be taken care of by members of team Aachen. When this is achieved, members of all other teams are kindly asked to help with the remaining work. Your team captain will be informed as soon as the V.S.O.P. is open for everyone to register.

DANCERS, YOU MAKE THE IMPACT

Thank you for helping us to make this ETDS a grand success! Without you it wouldn’t be this special event we all love and care about so much.

Yes, please do! We want you to remember the 57th ETDS fondly.
What kind of question is that?! Why wouldn’t you want to put on a costume?! Costumes and getting dressed up is very important to us and an important part of our culture. Inhabitants of Aachen wait all year to celebrate the “fifth season” – Mardi Gras – and then party on for five days! Thus, we utterly don’t understand why someone wouldn’t put on a costume as soon as there’s an opportunity to do so. BUT since we are diverse and tolerant: If it isn’t possible for you to wear one for whatever reason we will turn a blind eye. Probably.
That’s a question only you know the answer to. But we highly encourage you to catch up on sleep beforehand and plan your theme costume ahead of time.
